Moorit grey horned ewe. May carry spotting. Born April 22, 2013.
Laelia (Laye-Lee-Ah) is the last lamb born this year to our second oldest ewe, Drea. She is named for an orchid, because she is so small and delicate looking right now. In fact, she was the smallest lamb born this year. Drea gave birth between lambing checks, with no assistance. She wasn’t showing signs of labor at the early morning check, then there was a lamb at the next check. Despite her small start, she is growing rapidly and developing into a nice chunky lamb. She looks like she has her mother’s short neck and broad shoulders, as well as her mother’s ultra soft wool. She is the softest lamb born here, and her mother has some of the softest wool of the flock. Her personality is quite skittish right now, though I think that has to do with her vision. (See below.)
A few days after her birth, we came to the realization that Laelia was a preemie for several reasons: Her first teeth didn’t erupt until 4 days after she was born, and she seems to have some eyesight trouble. Unfortunately, the poor vision seems here to stay; she sees shape and movement, but can’t seem to discern details. (She will walk up to the wrong mother, for instance, sniff her, then run off to the next one to try to find her real mother.) Despite this, she gets around fine, and is growing very well. She is a chunky little thing that is developing gorgeous wool. Due to her poor vision, she will likely be retained for breeding here and not sold. I think she will be a fine breeding ewe someday; the vision is not genetic.
