Ferdinand

Ferdinand at a year and a half old. 12.27.2013.

Moorit homozygous grey horned ram. Born April 7, 2012.

Ferdinand is all the way from Hyalite Farm in Montana. He is an amazing ram in terms of growth and build alike; his build is nice and thick, his body is long, and he is huge for his age. Overall his balance is good; he is nicely put together. His chest is nicely wide, widest of any of our rams. I’ve seen wider, but personally would not prefer wider than what Ferdinand’s is; too wide of a chest can lead to difficulty in lambing. (Overly wide chest= hard to pass through pelvis.) His shoulders are well muscled, as is his neck; the two blend quite well. His loin muscle is nice and thick as well, with a pretty level back. His hind legs have excellent width between them and are overall well muscled. The only thing I’d improve on him(and this is really getting picky, because I do love this ram’s build) is to proportionally give him a little larger leg muscles from a profile view. I use Sting as my ideal when it comes to the kind of hind leg shape, proportional size, and muscling that is my favorite. Ferdinand’s wool is turning out about average for softness and quantity; he has a lot of thel, and somewhat sparse tog. His horns are just huge and incredibly wide for his age. I can’t see them ever causing trouble for him. However, because they are so coarse, if we ever breed a ewe lamb, he would not be used for that task. Plus, he hasn’t had to be dewormed all summer. His personality is curious but not pushy; he likes to watch from a respectful distance, but nor is he fearful or flighty. He will readily move out of the way if you walk past him. He is a real gentleram with the other sheep as well, being content to be quiet and a little lazy and not cause trouble. He will, however, put another ram in his place if challenged, but not use excessive force in the process. He has proven to be quite handleable on halter.
